Before there were smartphones, people – workers, entrepreneurs, scientists, artists, and philosophers – brought pocket notebooks everywhere they went. These notebooks were small enough to fit into their pockets, yet were sturdy enough to withstand different weathers, and had enough pages for them to catalog months’ worth of ideas, observations, and reflections.
Field Notes pays homage to this historic practice that’s arguably the foundation of many, if not all, progress in our society.
Field Notes is an American notebook brand that started as a joint venture between Portland’s Draplin Design Company and Chicago’s Coudal Partners. It creates smartly designed, vintage-style pocket notebooks, calendars, and other stationery products.
The company was inspired by Aaron Draplin’s passion for the utilitarian memo books American farmers used in the past. Draplin wanted to pay homage to these novelties and prevent them from disappearing into history with the Field Notes pocket notebooks.
Field Notes continues to be faithful to the American agricultural history of the notebooks in their designs. Just as agricultural companies produced memo books with a wide range of designs, Field Notes notebooks also come in simple designs and colorful images.
Field Notes has modernized the analogue experience – the painstakingly personal process of carving your thoughts out into paper – with their range of notebooks. Besides the different colors and prints on the cover of the notebooks, there are different paper styles.
If you’re the type who writes lists or jots down your ideas in sentences or paragraphs, you’ve got the ruled notebooks.
If you’re the free-spirited type who may jump from drawing or doodling to writing down ideas, the dot-graph paper offers a balance between structure and flexibility.
If you prefer more structure for charts and writing, grid notebooks may be more up to your speed.
If you’re an artist, you probably prefer a notebook with a blank canvas so you can create whatever you visualize.
